Northern gannets (morus bassanus) gather in their thousands in Spring every year at Bempton Cliffs in Yorkshir to mate, hatch and rear their young. They’re a stunningly beautiful bird, the largest seabird in the UK with a wing-span of two metres. They nest close together on the edge of the chalk cliffs at Bemptonalong with other seabirds including puffins, razorbills, guillemots fulmars and kittiwakes. While everyone loves the puffins, for me, the gannets are the stars of the show, putting on a spectacular display greeting each other by “billing”, repelling unwanted guests to their nests and flying by launching themselves off the cliffs. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) manages Bempton Cliffs, providing good walking tracks and lookouts along the cliffs. These images come from a two day visit to Bempton in May 2025. gh
