Daly Waters and Katherine

Daly Waters is not really a town. It’s a pub that grew and grew in the middle of nowhere. It’s not even on the highway but for thousands of travellers it is a place you must visit. It’s a pub, motel, caravan park, service station, entertainment centre, restaurant, souvenir shop, gathering of old junk (like broken helicopters and aircraft), the home of Australia’s first international airport, and it features a giant mud crab, on the roof, (where else would you put it?). Every night the place is full and rocking (in a country sort of way), although it can be a bit challenging getting back to your accommodation in the dark as livestock, including a donkey and some pretty large cattle, wander around the grounds! Heading north from Daly Waters it’s worth visiting the well-kept war cemetery at Adelaide River. It’s one of many reminders that the far north was Australia’s front-line during the second world war and was subject to extensive bombing. From there to Katherine for a brief stop that included the interesting Cutta Cutta caves. The world renowned Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge will wait until a proper visit later in this journey.
