The Flinders Ranges in South Australia is a remarkable area. Everywhere you look there are spectacular vistas with amazing rock formations and colours. Almost every geographic period of earth is represented from the Cambrian period 500 million years ago through to today. Wilpena Pound is a great location to stay with many wonderful walks, drives through ancient gorges, fascinating villages like the old copper mining town of Blinman, and Parachilna with the Prairie Hotel offering locally acquired feral animals on their menu! The area also has an abundance of native wildlife, particularly emus in large numbers, red and grey kangaroos, euros, possums, wedge-tailed eagles, numerous parrots, and even an occasional wandering quoll, a native cat that is the largest marsupial predator in Australia. There are also beautiful yellow-footed rock wallabies, although with their long striped tails perhaps they should be called “tiger” wallabies. The Flinders Ranges is a place definately worth visiting. GH
